The prerequisite for the passage is that the rider can influence the frequency of the trot. We want to be able to slow down the movement sequence of the trot with the seat without having to use the reins to brake. Because we want to put energy into the passage, which means we mustn’t hold on with our reins- that would create tension. Like almost no other movement, the passage requires that we can really, truly ride our horses from the seat. And here too our principle applies: “Start early and then take a long time”. Because only through good preparation and correct basic work can we control the motion sequence and every step precisely with our seat. Over the course of the horse’s training we can eventually ride very subtle, fluent transitions – from extended, trot to collected trot to passage and piaffe. This way you will finally achieve a supple, powerful passage in which your horse starts to dance and becomes proud and majestic.
