This Weymouth with its high, forward angled port relieves the tongue and prevents pressure on the palate. We like to use this bit on horses with fleshy tongues and little space in the mouth.
The Bemelmans Weymouth by Sprenger lies perfectly between the tongue ans palatal arch. It has a high and forward angled port, providing space for the tongue and avoiding pressure on the palate.
Horses that tend to pull their tongue up and stick it out to the side usually do so to avoid unpleasant pressure or simply because there is not enough room in the mouth.
The Bemelmans riding bit is soft in the transitions and the mouthpiece – shaped to resemble the sensitive palatal arch – is tapered towards the middle, so that it fits perfectly between the tongue and palatal arch and thus relieves the tongue.
When the reins are picked up, the special shape distributes pressure evenly and softly on the tongue. The pressure on the poll is comparatively low due to the short cheeks, but occurs more quickly. This enables fine, precise aids to be given by a soft, sensitive rider’s hand.
